A garage door is the largest moving part of most homes, and it gets used every day. When one piece wears out, the rest of the system feels it. We repair residential and commercial garage doors across the Huntington area and surrounding cities, and we start every repair the same way: by finding out exactly why the door is misbehaving.

What we repair

These are the repairs we handle most often:

  • Spring Repair & Replacement. Broken or worn torsion and extension springs, the parts that do the heavy lifting.
  • Track Alignment & Repair. Bent, loose or out of line tracks that make a door bind, scrape or jump off.
  • Opener Troubleshooting & Repair. Openers that hum and do nothing, stop partway, or ignore the remote.
  • Cable Repair & Replacement. Frayed or snapped lift cables that leave a door hanging crooked.
  • Sensor Repair & Alignment. Safety reverse sensors that keep the door from closing.
  • Emergency Garage Door Repair.
  • And more, just ask!

If your problem is not on the list, call (304) 553-6862 and describe what the door is doing.

Signs your door needs a repair

Garage doors usually warn you before they quit. Watch and listen for:

  • New noises: grinding, scraping, popping or a loud bang from the garage
  • A door that moves slowly, jerks, or travels unevenly with one side ahead of the other
  • Gaps at the floor on one side when the door is closed
  • A door that reverses before it reaches the floor
  • An opener that runs but the door does not move, or moves only a few inches
  • Frayed cables, loose hardware, or a gap in a spring coil
  • A remote or wall button that works some of the time

We cover each of these in more detail in our post on signs your garage door needs repair.

How we diagnose a garage door

A symptom can have more than one cause. A door that stops halfway might have a broken spring, a worn opener gear, a bent track, or a sensor problem. So we look at the whole system before we recommend anything.

We check the springs and cables for wear and tension, run a balance test with the opener disconnected, and inspect the rollers, hinges and tracks for wear and alignment. We test the safety reverse sensors and the opener's force and limit settings. Then we tell you what we found, what it will take to fix it, and the estimate, before any work begins.

Safety first: what not to do yourself

Some garage door care is fine for a homeowner. Wiping the sensor lenses, clearing the tracks of debris, and lubricating rollers and hinges are all safe jobs. Our guide to garage door safety sensor troubleshooting walks through the checks you can make on your own.

Other parts are dangerous. Springs hold the weight of the door under high tension, and the cables, bottom brackets and drums attached to them carry that same load. Loosening the wrong bolt can release that tension all at once. If the problem involves springs, cables or the bottom brackets, leave the door closed if you can, unplug the opener, and call us.

Repairs in a river valley climate

Huntington weather is part of the story. Humid summers along the Ohio River can rust hardware and swell wood doors. Freeze and thaw cycles in winter stiffen grease, make weatherstripping brittle, and put extra strain on springs when the door is cold. Many repairs we see trace back to a season of hard use without lubrication or a balance check. A little upkeep goes a long way, and we are happy to point out anything that looks worn while we are there.

When repair turns into replacement

Most garage doors can be repaired. Sometimes, though, a door has damaged panels, a long history of problems, or no insulation in a garage you want to keep warmer. If a new door makes more sense, we will tell you why and walk you through the options on our garage door installation page. If the opener is the weak point, see garage door opener repair and installation. For spring problems, our spring repair and replacement page has the details.

Garage Door Repairquestions

Why does my garage door go down and then back up again?

Most of the time it is the safety reverse system doing its job. The photo eye sensors near the floor may be out of line, dirty, or blocked, or something is in the door's path. A door that reverses as soon as it touches the floor can also point to a close limit setting on the opener that needs adjustment.

Is a noisy garage door a sign of a problem?

It can be. Squeaks often mean dry rollers and hinges. Grinding, popping or banging is worth a closer look, since worn rollers, loose hardware or a spring under strain all make noise before they fail.

Can I keep using a door that is off its track?

No. A door that has come off its track can fall or jam further if you run it. Unplug the opener, keep people and cars clear, and call for service.

My door opens a few inches and stops. What is wrong?

That is often a broken spring. The opener senses the full weight of the door and quits. Do not keep pressing the button, because that strains the opener. Have the springs checked.

Should I try to fix garage door cables myself?

We do not recommend it. Cables are connected to the springs, which hold the door's weight under high tension. Cable work is best left to a technician with the right tools.
