Is it safe to replace a garage door spring myself?
No. Garage door springs hold the weight of the door under high tension, and the cables and brackets attached to them carry the same load. A slip while winding or unhooking a spring can release that energy in an instant. Spring work is a job for a trained technician with the right tools.

What is the difference between torsion and extension springs?
Torsion springs sit on a steel shaft above the door and twist to help lift it. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. Extension springs should always have a safety cable running through them so a broken spring cannot whip loose.
Why does my garage door reverse before it reaches the floor?
The most common cause is the safety reverse sensors, the small photo eyes near the bottom of each track. If they are dirty, knocked out of line, or blocked, the opener will not let the door close. A door that reverses right as it touches the floor can also point to a limit or force setting on the opener that needs adjustment.
How often should I lubricate my garage door?
A light lubrication of the rollers, hinges, bearings and springs a couple of times a year keeps a door quieter and smoother, and before winter is a good time for one of them. Use a lubricant made for garage doors, and do not grease the inside of the tracks, since that collects dirt.
Is a belt drive or chain drive opener better?
Both work well. A chain drive is durable but louder. A belt drive runs much quieter, which matters if there is a bedroom or living space next to or above the garage. The right choice depends on your door, your garage and how much noise you mind.
How can I tell if my garage door is balanced?
Close the door, pull the emergency release to disconnect the opener, and lift the door by hand to about halfway. A balanced door stays put. If it drops or rises on its own, the springs need adjustment by a technician. Reconnect the opener before you use it again.
Should I get an insulated garage door?
If your garage is attached, has a room above it, or you spend time in it during cold months, an insulated door helps the space stay more comfortable and quieter. Insulated doors are also usually stiffer and more resistant to dents than single layer doors.
