Common opener problems we fix

  • The opener hums or clicks but nothing moves. Often a worn drive gear, a disconnected trolley, or a door that is too heavy because of a spring problem.
  • The door stops partway or reverses. Usually the safety reverse sensors, the force setting, or the travel limits.
  • The remote works only up close, or not at all. Batteries, programming, or a blocked antenna.
  • The opener is loud. A loose chain, worn parts, or a mounting that has worked loose.
  • The wall button or keypad is dead. Wiring or the control itself.

Troubleshooting starts with the door, not the opener. If the springs or tracks are the real problem, we will tell you, because a new opener on a poorly balanced door will not last.

Wi-Fi belt drive openers

When it is time for a new opener, we install Wi-Fi belt drive openers with two remotes. A belt drive runs much quieter than a chain drive, which matters if there is a bedroom above the garage or a living room on the other side of the wall. Wi-Fi control lets you open, close and check the door from your phone, so you can stop wondering whether you left it open.

Already have an opener? We will install it

If you already bought an opener, we can install it for you, and we haul away the old one so you are not left with it in the garage.

Repair or replace?

There is no single answer, but a few things tip the scale:

  • Repair makes sense when the opener is in good shape overall and the problem is a single part, a setting, a remote, or a sensor.
  • Replace makes sense when the opener is old and noisy, has had repeated problems, lacks features you want such as phone control, or when you are installing a new door.

Our opener repair or replace guide goes deeper into the decision, including belt versus chain and what to look for in a new unit.

Safety features that matter

Every opener we work on gets its safety systems checked. The photo eye sensors near the floor must see each other for the door to close, and the door must reverse when it meets an obstruction. We align the sensors, set the force and travel limits, and test the reverse before we leave. If your door has started reversing for no clear reason, our safety sensor troubleshooting guide covers the checks you can make yourself.

Openers in cold weather

Huntington winters can slow an opener down. Grease stiffens in the cold, weatherstripping can freeze to the floor, and a door with weak springs feels heavier when it is cold. If your opener struggles on cold mornings, it is often telling you about the door, not itself. We check balance and lubrication as part of the visit.

When the power goes out

Every opener has an emergency release, usually a red cord hanging from the trolley on the rail. Pull it and the door disconnects from the opener so you can lift it by hand. That only works safely on a balanced door, so if the door feels too heavy to lift, stop and call. Some openers also carry a battery backup that keeps the door running through an outage, which is worth asking about if the garage is your main way in and out of the house. Once power is back, lower the door, pull the release toward the door to reconnect it, and run the opener through a cycle.

Garage Door Opener Repair & Installationquestions

What is the difference between a belt drive and a chain drive opener?

Both pull the door along a rail. A chain drive uses a metal chain, which is durable but louder. A belt drive uses a reinforced belt, which runs much quieter. That matters most when there is a bedroom or living space next to or above the garage.

What does a Wi-Fi opener let me do?

A Wi-Fi opener connects to your home network so you can open, close and check the door from your phone. It is handy when you cannot remember whether you closed the door, or when you need to let someone into the garage while you are away.

Why does my opener run but the door does not move?

The opener may be disconnected from the door at the emergency release, or a gear or drive part inside it may be worn. It can also mean a broken spring, which makes the door too heavy to lift. Have it checked before you keep trying.

My remote stopped working but the wall button works. What should I check?

Start with the remote battery. If that does not help, the remote may need to be reprogrammed to the opener, or the opener's antenna may be blocked or damaged.

Does a new opener fix a door that is hard to lift?

No. The springs are supposed to carry the weight of the door, and the opener just guides it. A door that is heavy to lift by hand needs spring work first, or a new opener will wear out early.
